Abstract

The teaching of English conversation in vocational high schools faces various challenges, including students' limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and minimal exposure to authentic communication contexts. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of interactive teaching methods in improving students' conversational English skills in a vocational school setting. The research was conducted through classroom-based observation involving eleventh-grade students at a vocational high school, focusing on speaking activities such as role play, dialogue practice, and situational conversation tasks. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to examine the implementation process and its impact on students' speaking performance. Data were collected through performance assessments, teacher observations, and student reflections. The findings show that the use of contextual learning techniques combined with real-life communication scenarios significantly increased student engagement, fluency, and pronunciation accuracy. Students showed greater willingness to speak English during classroom interaction, and their ability to construct coherent spoken responses improved over the course of the study. Furthermore, teacher support and peer collaboration played crucial roles in creating a supportive environment that encouraged active language use. Based on the results, it can be concluded that integrating practical communication activities within the English curriculum effectively enhances the speaking competence of vocational students. The study highlights the importance of using learner-centered approaches to develop communication skills and recommends that English conversation be emphasized as a core component of language instruction in vocational education.

 

ABSTRAK

Pengajaran percakapan bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah kejuruan menghadapi berbagai tantangan, termasuk keterbatasan kosakata siswa, kurangnya kepercayaan diri, dan minimnya paparan terhadap konteks komunikasi yang autentik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi efektivitas metode pengajaran interaktif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan percakapan bahasa Inggris siswa di lingkungan sekolah kejuruan. Penelitian dilakukan melalui observasi kelas yang melibatkan siswa kelas sebelas di sebuah sekolah menengah kejuruan, dengan fokus pada aktivitas berbicara seperti bermain peran, latihan dialog, dan tugas percakapan situasional. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan untuk mengkaji proses pelaksanaan dan dampaknya terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa. Data dikumpulkan melalui penilaian kinerja, observasi guru, dan refleksi siswa. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan teknik pembelajaran kontekstual yang dipadukan dengan skenario komunikasi nyata secara signifikan meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa, kelancaran berbicara, dan ketepatan pelafalan. Siswa menunjukkan kemauan yang lebih besar untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris selama interaksi di kelas, dan kemampuan mereka dalam membangun respons lisan yang koheren mengalami peningkatan selama proses pembelajaran. Selain itu, dukungan dari guru dan kolaborasi antar teman sebaya memainkan peran penting dalam menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang mendukung dan mendorong penggunaan bahasa secara aktif. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa integrasi aktivitas komunikasi praktis ke dalam kurikulum bahasa Inggris secara efektif meningkatkan kompetensi berbicara siswa kejuruan. Penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya pendekatan pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa untuk mengembangkan keterampilan komunikasi, dan merekomendasikan agar percakapan bahasa Inggris dijadikan komponen inti dalam pengajaran bahasa di pendidikan kejuruan
